"La Mer" of Ghislain de Compreignac is a new abstract classical ballet choreography created to the eponymous piece by Debussy. Seeing it rehearsed once moved me deeply. It gave me the impression of separateness and in the same time oneness of the sea waves, that look like they can be distinguished from one another and yet are all vibrations of the water with no defined limits. These waves, gentle in the beginning turn into turbulent but yet highly organized motion as the music develops towards culmination, leaving me with a picture of individual beings carried by the unruly swirl of life of which they have no control.
